Australian PM Voices Concern After Mideast Tensions Reignite

(MENAFN) Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese voiced serious alarm Wednesday over the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Middle East, as the United States launched new airstrikes against Iran following the reported shootdown of a US Army helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to media, Albanese warned that the widening conflict threatened to inflict severe humanitarian and economic damage far beyond the region's borders.

"We're very worried both about the human impact, of course, that comes with war, but also the economic impact that is having a massive effect on the global economy and will get worse rather than better," he said, according to a transcript released from his office.

The Australian leader renewed Canberra's appeal for restraint, pressing all parties toward what he called "a de-escalation" of hostilities. Despite Australia's geographic remove from the conflict zone, Albanese underscored that no nation was shielded from the economic shockwaves now radiating outward — pointing to surging inflation and mounting financial uncertainty as direct consequences.

Acknowledging that President Donald Trump acted in response to the destruction of a US Apache helicopter by Iranian fire, Albanese nonetheless kept focus on the broader objective: "We want to see peace break out in the region in a permanent way."

The military exchange has since escalated sharply. US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American fighter jets struck Iranian air defense installations and radar facilities near the Strait of Hormuz in direct retaliation for the helicopter downing.

Iran wasted no time responding. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced in the early hours of Wednesday that it had launched retaliatory strikes against 21 American military targets spanning US air and naval bases across the region — a significant broadening of the confrontation that has raised fears of a wider war.
